The point of using this was to create silly scenes of these zombies doing human activities. Mike re-attaches his hand to his arm with cellotape. All-in-all - This is the kind of horror-movie junk-food that is best left unwatched. . The horror content is nil and as for the comedic value, I'm afraid I didn't laugh a single time. It's fun to watch and it looks like it was fun to make. But they only truly capitalized on this a couple of times, when they had numerous occasions to do so. French's flag-waving patriotism, the American way, the bravery of a soldier, the heroism and duty of a man in uniform, is played to perfection, and his bravado is charming. Nicky makes them swear they won't tell anyone. I cared about them, and got weepy-eyed towards the end.

Starting from a brilliant idea the Kohnens have developed a smartly silly script and translated this into a nicely paced movie. She bites him and Kanan screams. Turning the zombie film on its head, this film is an oddball comedy from the perspective of the brain munching monsters themselves. Mike and Tim compete against them while Cindy and Vanessa keep them drunk to disorient them. Wasting Away is a zomedy.
At times it is laugh-out loud funny but at others the humour falls flat, or is just a little bit lame. This really makes you think about all the different people in this world and perhaps if we could see things from each others angle then our entire paradigm would change. The concept of zombies being like everyone else just slower. Tim, an employee, eats it with his friends: Mike, his girlfriend Cindy, and Vanessa, Mike's ex-girlfriend. Mike tells Vanessa to pull him on the table. The plot races along fast enough that the audience is never bored, but well-paced enough that we have time to get to know the characters and meditate on the ridiculous situation they are in. Mike's hand moves by itself and tries to feed. There's quite a lot of carnage and bloodshed going on, but the emphasis merely lies on the comedy factor.
And when 'Shaun of the Dead' came out, that kind of closed the book on Zombie Comedy for me. So Wasting Away is a low-budget combie that in my opinion delivered a pretty damn satisfying flick. The storyline is simple but keeps pace throughout and never really drags at all. After he shows Nick his zombie self, Nick becomes enraged and escapes. Furious, Colonel South has Nick taken in alive.
This one does just that. This movie is designed to earn our sympathy and heart for those inflicted with the virus, perhaps the reason Kohnen and company decided to show them, for the most part, as if they were still human, their personalities and human traits intact. Their confusion is quickly compounded by an encounter with Nick Steele Colby French , who has also been zombified but insists that they have all been transformed into 'supersoldiers' whilst everyone else in the city has been infected by an inferior brand of the same chemical in fact, no one else has been affected. I'll say no more, you have to see it yourself. I see them at a bowling alley just hanging around drinking beer and eating nachos. Also I liked the use of color vs black and white to portray the differences between the way they see themselves as opposed to the way they are seen by everyone else. The premise is that the military develops a serum that is supposed to turn average soldiers into super soldiers.
Tim, Cindy, Mike, and Vanessa reunite at the bowling arcade, only to be challenged to a bowling match by Tim's rival Danny and his team, who are all drunk; only drunken people see zombies as humans. Mike eats the brains of Cook 1 in a taco. From the beginning this movie is sharp, funny original and far better then 90% of the low budget Zombie flicks I watch. It's refreshing, original, gleefully gross and most of all, it's fun. Saw this little Indy gem at Screamfest where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature.
