I believe that besides arbitrary world building, the fact that Frank can communicate with Donnie from a future where he has been murdered by him and this represents the only chance Donnie has for salvation is quite powerful.
Frank touching his eye in the final montage and Gretchen waving to Donnie's mum proves that some of the characters have some knowledge of what happened within the lost world. Gretchen is also Manipulated Dead but she doesn't appear to Donnie in the same way as it might be to confusing for him. I think she is a visual metaphor for the tangent world we are watching. Where the Artifact originally comes from is never disclosed. If you listen to the commentary track on the director's cut it's him with Kevin Smith , you can tell very quickly that he has no idea what he's talking about.
